Moving WordPress Deployments from FTP to Git
On a long-running WordPress project, I helped move the team from manual FTP uploads to a Git-based deployment workflow.
The challenge
FTP-based changes can be difficult to review, trace, and repeat consistently. A team benefits when theme changes are versioned and the deployment process is easier to follow.
What I did
I moved the workflow from uploading theme files manually to deploying through Git, making version control part of delivery.
- Introduced Git-based deployment for WordPress theme changes.
- Made code changes easier to review and track in version history.
- Reduced dependence on manual file uploads as the release process.
- Did not claim a specific deployment-time reduction.
What this demonstrates
This is a focused example of improving the engineering process around an existing WordPress site, not just adding features. The approach can be adapted to an agency’s existing hosting and review workflow.
